The beautiful island of St. Ories was discovered in late
July of 1996 after powerful Hurricane Bertha ravaged
coastal North Carolina. The island, which was discovered by
Dicky Scearce and Jack Ketner while they were out on
a fishing trip, must have been uncovered by the treacherous
surf that accompanied the storm. The island is located
less than five miles from the Bogue Inlet near Swansboro,
the exact longtitude and lattitude have not yet been
dislosed to the public due to the founders wish to
maintain their privacy. St. Ories is not only unique
because of the way it was uncovered but also in the fact
that it has the largest known population of lobsters
in the world. Scearce and Ketner, upon discovering the
size and number of lobsters on St. Ories, have now opened
the St. Ories Lobster Farm, Inc. The farm produces over
ten thousand pounds of lobster per week. St. Ories and
the lobster farm are open to visitors throughout the year.
Those wishing to visit the island should contact the
St. Ories Tourism Department at (1-800-Mon-e-4-me) to
arrange for transport and accomadation. The only
recommendation we make is that you do try to schedule your
trip on a Tuesday through Friday, the reason for this
being that that the boats leave early in the morning
and the captains are usually quite unpleasant after a long
night of drinking at the Scearce and Ketner shows on the
weekends. Trips to St. Ories are expensive but worth it.
Trips from Tuesday to Friday cost $50.00 for the charter
of a boat out to the island and then $75.00 per person
per night for accomadation. Saturday through Monday are
a little more the cost is $5,000.00 for the boat charter
and $5,000.00 per person per night.Unfortunately, the
free lobster buffet is only offered on Saturday through
Monday, the choice is yours, for me I'll skip the lobster!
Upon arrival on St. Ories your blindfolds are removed
and you can see the beautiful grounds of the lobster farm.
There are parrots in the trees and beautiful tropical
flowers and trees surrounding the entire island and the
water is an astounding caribbean clear blue, in fact you
can see the lobster all around. The accomadations are
beautiful apartments overlooking the lobster farm and
each has a west facing balcony so you can view the amazing
island sunsets. There is a restaraunt and bar facility
on the island with good food at unreasonable prices. So
after hearing all this what are you waiting for....get
on the phone and book yourself the holiday of a lifetime
here on beautiful St. Ories.
